Description

Fort Halifax, first built in 1754 by English settlers on the Kennebec River for protection from hostile Native Americans in the area around what is now Winslow, is a National Historic Landmark and the oldest blockhouse in the United States.

Although it was dismantled in a flood in 1987, the original logs were recovered and pieced back together. The fort is pictured here in the early 1900s.
